Dedicated to the world of food, Salone del Gusto is once more united into a single event with the international meeting of Terra Madre, the network of small-scale producers from around the world, which is now in its 10th year. Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2014 will be held from October 23-27 in Turin’s trade fair Centre Lingotto Fiere and see the presence of over 1000 exhibitors from 130 countries, including over 300 Slow Food Presidia, chefs, farmers, fishers, academics, artisans, representatives from the worlds of wine and gastronomy, and the Terra Madre food communities. Explore the event program to find out more about the themes, Taste Workshops, and the international marketplace on: http://www.salonedelgusto.com/en/. Two main topics will be at the center of this year’s edition: Firstly, Slow Food’s international Ark of Taste project conceived to catalog and promote foods that are at risk of extinction.
Salone will have a specific space dedicated to the Ark of Taste to tell the individual stories of these quality productions that belong to the cultures, history and traditions of the entire planet and explain their real, commonly overseen value. The second main topic is Family Farming, in line with the UN’s declaration of 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). The gardens that Slow Food is creating within the framework of the 10,000 Gardens in Africa project all showcase small-scale farming practiced within intimate and close borders of communities or schools in Africa and are therefore prime examples of family farming. Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre will offer the possibility to learn more about this project during conferences or through firsthand reports from the delegates working on the gardens project on the ground. A new arrival at this year’s event, the Cooking School, is an evolution of Taste Education, Slow Food’s approach to food education. The Cooking School is a place of exchange, with participants actively involved in the preparation of dishes, just like in a real restaurant kitchen. At the heart of every edition of Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre is a range of food-related hot topics that are increasingly important, especially in light of the environmental, agricultural social and health problems linked to climate change, increasing population numbers, world hunger and more. We invite external specialists as well as Slow Food representatives to talk about key topics (animal welfare, food waste, land grabbing, meat consumption, indigenous people, bees, family farming, etc.) in a packed program of conferences and Taste Workshops to show the impacts our eating and consumption habits have on the welfare of the planet’s ecosystems, people and animals.
